From California

THE JOHN O'HARA SOCIETY

Excerpts from a November 22, 1938 letter to English critic and scholar John Hayward:

"This Hollywood is not much different from the Hollywood I have come to know. A little bit of Broadway, a bit of California, a little bit of England, and a liberal portion of the Ghetto. . . I have not signed with a picture company or any other company, but I will if they think I'm not too repulsive. . .
From time to time I grow mildly curious as to the publication and reception, if any, of Hope of Heaven & Others Stories. . . Waal, pardner, it is time for me to finish dressing and go downstairs and get drunk."
