They actually resided in the former home of Frederick Yuengling, a prominent brewer in the town. The house was vacated after his death in 1900 when his son erected a Tudor-style mansion some seven blocks away. My father was a schoolmate of John O'Hara and put him up in NYC for about a year when he left Pottsville and said that Dr. O'Hara was much respected by the prominent citizens for his discretion but that young John was privy to the activities of the coal, textile and railroad residents of the town, which was, like neighboring Frackville, wide open during Prohibition. Over scotch and water which I loathed, he encouraged me to read O'Hara. He advocated the accessable nature of the author's work and in particular the brilliant dialogue of his characters. Now writer Loovis may have only been fostering what a sixteen year old would easily grasp onto. Grasp I did. <br />"Appointment...," "Terrace...," etc. I continue to choose the author's short stories from my bedside table.<br />David Loovis urged me to "progress" in my reading sophistication by advancing to Somerset Maugham and onward to Proust. The persona who is offering an alternate obituary is pompous, cliched, and clueless. His exaggeration creates a very funny portrait of Walter T. Carriman, which is eventually extended into a satirical burlesque of the average American. But as we read it more closely we see that the most devastating portrait is of the obituary writer himself.<br />Franknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15837393.post-21572452982176702392014-10-23T07:33:12.207-04:002014-10-23T07:33:12.207-04:00A Rage to Live (1949) is a masterpiece - a very un...A Rage to Live (1949) is a masterpiece - a very under-appreciated novel. It's a terrific way to teach both literature and local history, as the teacher points out. Kudos to him. My mother grew up in Pottsville in the 30s and early 40s. She went to Pottsville Catholic High (now BVM) just behind Kathleen O'Hara, JOH's youngest sibling.
